DiskBolt questions and answers

Short, factual answers about safety, Full Disk Access, price and the pre-release build.

What is DiskBolt?

DiskBolt is a disk-cleanup app for macOS. It finds system junk such as caches, apps and the files they leave behind, old installers, developer artifacts, and big files you have not opened in a long time. You review what it found and choose what goes to the Trash. It is in pre-release and is not generally available yet.

Is DiskBolt safe?

DiskBolt is built so that nothing is removed until you confirm it. Items you choose are moved to the macOS Trash, so you can put them back, and DiskBolt reports a cleanup as done only after the move to the Trash is confirmed. A preview is required before anything is removed, and backups and installers stay unticked until you choose them. One exception: deleting Xcode simulator runtimes cannot go to the Trash, and DiskBolt asks before doing it.

What happens when I remove something?

Everything you tick goes to a review panel first, and that panel is the only route to the Trash. DiskBolt then asks you to confirm, with the count of items in the question. After you confirm, the items move to the Trash. Anything you left unticked is kept.

Can I undo a cleanup?

Yes. After a move to the Trash, DiskBolt offers Undo for 10 seconds, and the timer pauses while you hover over it. You can also press Command-Z to undo the last move for the rest of the session. Because items are in the Trash, you can also restore them from the Trash yourself.

Why does DiskBolt ask for Full Disk Access?

macOS protects some folders, including places where caches, logs and app leftovers live. DiskBolt needs Full Disk Access to measure those folders. Only you can grant it, in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access. DiskBolt does not remove anything until you approve a scan and confirm what goes.

Can I use DiskBolt without Full Disk Access?

Yes. On the Full Disk Access screen you can choose Continue with limited results. DiskBolt then cannot measure the protected folders, so it may find less to clear. You can grant access later and press Recheck.

How do I turn off Full Disk Access for DiskBolt?

Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access and switch DiskBolt off, or remove it from the list. You can turn it back on at any time in the same place.

How much does DiskBolt cost?

DiskBolt is pay what you want, from US$8. You choose the amount and the minimum is US$8. Checkout is not open yet while DiskBolt is in pre-release.

Is DiskBolt notarized?

Not yet. The current tester build is ad hoc signed and is not notarised by Apple, so macOS shows a warning the first time you open it. This answer will be updated when that changes.

Does DiskBolt install anything else?

Yes. On first run, DiskBolt sets up its cleanup engine, a free open-source command-line component, using Homebrew. It shows each step on screen while it does this, and you can cancel.

Will DiskBolt ask for my password?

Most cleanups do not need it. Some maintenance tasks on the Optimize screen need administrator rights, and DiskBolt labels those tasks before you run them so you know macOS will ask for your password.

Which Macs does DiskBolt support?

DiskBolt runs on macOS. The minimum macOS version and supported Mac models will be published before release, once the release build is final.

Is DiskBolt available now?

Not to the public yet. DiskBolt is in pre-release with a tester build. When checkout opens, you will be able to get DiskBolt from this site.
